Hi friends! Today I want to share some amazing tips and tricks about decorating your house on a budget. As you may know about a year ago we purchased a fixer upper and needed to do tons of renovations to it. We are finished with a lot of the big projects and now we are really focusing on making this house a home with decorating it and styling it. I am a stay at home Mama so we are a one income household and that means a serious budget. So here are some tips and tricks that can help you if you are also on a budget like us!!!
1 Shop your local Habitat Restore
Habitat Restore is a non profit home improvement store. A friend of ours told us about this store when we first moved down to North Carolina and when we went to check it out, we were so surprised! They have so much to choose from and such great prices. I highly recommend them and if you have one close to you, go now and check it out. We have gotten so many pieces of furniture, most of our lighting in our house and so much more. All of there stuff is a fraction of the cost of new items and so worth it.
2 Go to yard sales/thrift stores
My mom used to take me to yard sales all the time when I was younger and I still love it. The saying is true…”One man’s trash is another man’s treasure.” I seriously love finding fun pieces that someone wants to get rid of. For some reason it makes it so fun for me. Plus, I will always remember that I scored that beautiful picture for 25 cents. I just love a good deal!
3 Re-purpose anything that you can
Okay so this kind of goes hand in hand with the last two things I have told you. But you would be surprised what a can of chalk paint or spray paint and a little TLC will do to old items. Sometimes these things just need a little revamping and you will love them even more! Keep reading and watching for specific blog posts on this kind of thing!!
4 Shop your house
Someone told me this not too long ago when I kind of felt like I was in a rut with my home decor. It was so helpful to me and I hope it helps you too. Look around your house for things and switch different decor items up a bit. You may really love your old vintage scale with a pretty candle on it sitting on your kitchen counter tops instead of that scale being on your coffee bar. If you switch things around you may actually like them better in the new spot.
5 Sell what you don’t like and buy new
Over the years of decorating the places we have lived, I have acquired a lot of different decor pieces. When we purchased our house here in North Carolina, I really took the time to go through my things and get rid of what didn’t fit into my style for our house. The best thing to do, in my opinion, is to go through your things and get rid of what you don’t and won’t use. Then use the money to buy something you love and that fits into your style!
6 DIY… you knew I had to include this one!
This is a huge one for me as many of you may already know. I love to redo or make anything that I can. I love the feeling of seeing something that I want, that I may not be able to afford or don’t want to spend the money on, and trying to make it myself. I usually try to do some researching first and see exactly how much it will cost in supplies before I try to DIY and if it is worth it then I go ahead and give it a try. I highly recommend trying a DIY project and if you are able to do it, I promise it will give you such a great feeling! I swear Pinterest and Youtube are my best friends when I DIY certain things.
7 Shop sales and use coupons
So every week at Hobby Lobby they run 50% off sales on certain items. They also have a 40% off coupon online that you can print or show the cashier on your phone. Also at Michael’s they have coupons all the time as well. If there is something you want that you don’t have the time to DIY it or it is easier to just buy it then wait for sales or use a coupon!!! I never buy anything full price from either of these stores and I am sure there are a ton of other stores that have sales and online coupons too.
8 Shop at The Dollar Tree
You may be asking yourself if I have lost my mind with this one, but seriously go check out your local Dollar Tree! They have really stepped up these last few years. They have so many practical items now. All of their craft supplies, floral department, vases, mugs, glassware, and decor has really improved. I usually go there every other week or so to check out their new stuff. Their seasonal items have really gotten better too. Lately they have had a ton of Farmhouse style pictures with frames, canvas prints, candlesticks, and a lot more. And if you search Pinterest you can find a ton of Dollar Tree up-cycle projects that are so neat. And again you know I will be sharing some here with you too.
